After so many years of having questions and real interest in "soul mates" I think that real clarification needs to be spoken. A "soul mate" is anyone that you have known from some other space and time. It can be any relationship that you have had in any of your lifetimes. These relationships that occurred before this life time do not necessarily have to have been romantic. The fact that you recognize this person in this lifetime, feel instantly connected, and weirdly familiar with him/her usually means that this is a prior connected spiritual relationship.
There are more than one soul mate. We have had a huge variety of relationships in former lifetimes. We have had Mothers and Fathers, siblings, children, friends, companions, and even lovers from our many lifetimes. Even if this person that we are now experiencing was formally a best friend, in this lifetime, and with the sexual 2nd Chakra open(sexual), it may certainly result in what feels like a "SOUL MATE", and may be a partner that will be excellent for both your development and his/hers.
Soul Mates are definitely not the same lover that you find lifetime after lifetime. Even though we may have had an unusually perfect relationship in a lifetime prior to this one, our soul development is different from one another, and may require growth in different cultures, different, time frames, and even different sexes.
